I went to a different Sunday-evening pub than the usual, and heard a couple of strange and vaguely disturbing things.

Firstly, a folk version of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction rewritten as (I Can't Get No) Sex in Bolton.

Secondly, a passing comment about being in demand. Yes, in that sense.

Eh? You wot?

Fuck it. I'm leaving anyway. I will never understand this town or its inhabitants.

Addendum : Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hirez for pointing out this fantastic article : http://www.theatlantic.com/issues/2003/03/rauch.htm.

the things people tell you after a couple of pints, eh?

Scared by the cover version now - who was it by?

Are you familiar with the Macc Ladds?

A Macclesfield based Half Man Half Biscuit, kind of.

They do Beer and Sex and Chips and Gravy, the North of England take on Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.

They also do a Ramones homage entitled Eh Up, Let's Sup!

And the one which reminded me - No Sheep til Buxton.

Amuses me, since I grew up around there & it reminds me of the local culture (did I really write that?)

What are you confused and annoyed about? Not being in demand, surely?

People who you just don't run into much, or people who you see fairly often but may just be too shy to speak to you, or...?

I confess I'm as confused as [livejournal.com profile] sibelian by this.

Ah. Ah. I see.
Some people have only *known* you for about six months, you know. ~s~
But I take it the person or persons in question isn't or aren't part of that category.

~hugs~ Fair enough. I'm sorry this has got to you, though.

Oh, and I want so much to answer that, too. I guess my icon will have to speak for itself.

(Seriously though. Some people haven't known you long and are too shy to say much anyway. Don't be too hard on them.)

Wondering why LJ doesn't have a "very small" HTML tag.

I recently moved to the area in question. So far I've seen plenty of beer, a few chips, some rock&roll and lots of sheep but have seen no evidence of the other items (yet...)

What, no gravy!?!

The chippies must offer gravy, surely?

Well, the few chips in question were from a Chinese takeaway so that may be why... and I haven't visited a proper chippy yet (not that I'd order gravy myself, but I'd probably notice if it was on the menu). Should I report back when I've been to a proper chippy?

I don't think that'll be necessary. I'm quietly confident on that one. Personally I prefer curry sauce & mushy peas, but al Lancashire chippies I've ever been to offer Gravy.

I'm more in the Cheshire/Derbyshire border area, though I did live in Lancashire for a while and indeed there was much gravy.
Mmmm... mushy peas! where I'm from those come as a big lump in crispy batter

I'll shut up now :)

I've never tried mushy peas in batter. THey should be a thick paste, though - not the watery rubbish with actual identifiable peas in it that to many places up here claim to be mushy peas. They haven't cooked them for long enough. ANother couple of days should do it.

I'm not sure about the fried in batter thing. It could work, but I'm being reminded of the pizza fried in batter one of my friends experienced up north somewhere. Deep fried pizza is horrible enough without battering it as well. I think I'd try the peas idea once, at least. It's not incest or folk dancing after all, and I've tried folk dancing.

Yes, these are thick paste mushy peas and in a very light batter - they're very nice and they go very well with chips...or indeed pasties. I've yet to see a battered pizza, and don't think I want to!
