Ho hum. Quest for working Alsa continues.

Last night I managed to get sound working for the little system noises, but not for anything else. This morning I don't have that. The sound modules aren't loading at boot (although they go in without complaint if you insmod them one by one) but there's no sound even after doing that and starting
alsa from its init.d script. I must have done something else last night that helped, but it obviously didn't seem significant enough at the time for me to remember it.

Independently of this, my cdrom drive - a plextor a couple of years old - is not now recognised as usable by any cd-player programs.

This is all very annoying. Linux denigrates should note that a few years ago I had a spectacularly similar set of problems on NT (on a different machine) which I never solved even after asking around all the people who ought to have known.

Arse. Oh well, I think I'll go to the shop and get myself something unhealthy.

Yes, I suppose I would. :} I did say *it* was cute, rather than you were cute, but yeah. MR-DA.

It's a slippery slope you know. I catch myself being disappointed when cute guys tell me they work in marketing these days ;)

I know. Graham isn't the first geek I've gone out with. :)

Um. Might be worth seeing if there's a later BIOS for the Plextor. That caused me no end of problems with W2k.

What's the dmesg look like?

(Mind you, I've always found soundcards & CD-burners to be total bastards whatever the OS)

My ALSA guru and long-suffering officemate Steve (WINOLJ) suggests running alsamixer and unmuting, since it defaults to mute.
