Slight retreat
Jan. 30th, 2004 02:50 pmHo hum. Quest for working Alsa continues.
Last night I managed to get sound working for the little system noises, but not for anything else. This morning I don't have that. The sound modules aren't loading at boot (although they go in without complaint if you insmod them one by one) but there's no sound even after doing that and starting
alsa from its init.d script. I must have done something else last night that helped, but it obviously didn't seem significant enough at the time for me to remember it.
Independently of this, my cdrom drive - a plextor a couple of years old - is not now recognised as usable by any cd-player programs.
This is all very annoying. Linux denigrates should note that a few years ago I had a spectacularly similar set of problems on NT (on a different machine) which I never solved even after asking around all the people who ought to have known.
Arse. Oh well, I think I'll go to the shop and get myself something unhealthy.
