Notes : I'm letting swisstone off calling it "The killing time" because I like him. And ant_girl's getting that point too, even though the song isn't called "Yay! It's the Killing Moon". And the last one wasn't Half Man Half Biscuit, although more than one person thought so.

1. They too hunger for the beast below

Puretone - "Addicted to bass" (9 points)

Recent eighties-tinged chart hit. "I really liked that song from the first time I heard it - which I think was about 1983" (M. Radcliffe)

2. There's no use trying to talk - no human sound can stand up to this. Loud enough to knock you down.

Ministry - "Jesus built my hotrod" (5 points)

A sample in the middle, apparently lifted from a documentary on drag racing.

3. . . . and he's got the Black & Decker. He's going to cut you into pieces and feed you to my goldfish.

Alice Donut - "Boyfriend" (11 points)

Their somewhat misanthropic version of the immortal "My boyfriend's back", of course.

4. Boot licking, piss drinking, finger frigging, tit tweaking, Love biting, arse licking, shit stabbing, mother fucking, spunk loving, ball busting, cock sucking, fist fucking, lip smacking, thirst quenching, cool living, ever giving.

Minty - "Useless Man" (8 points)

Yes, swearing is big and clever, thank you. And I don't understand the title, either - sounds to me like he's got lots of uses.

5. Fate, up against your will

Echo and the Bunnymen - "The Killing Moon" (26 points)

The one everyone got. Almost.

6. You say you've got to go home 'cos he's sitting on his own again this evening. I know you're gonna let him bore your pants off again

Pulp - "Do you remember the first time?" (17 points)

In my last lyric quiz too. Oh, the shame . . .

7. It's more the way your eyes are laughing as they glance across the great divide

A Flock of Seagulls - "Wishing (if I had a photograph of you)" (12 points)

Self-indulgent melancholy from people with bad haircuts. But as self-indulgent melancholy from people with bad haircuts goes, it's not half bad.

8. Seeing the flowers scream their joy

The Lotus Eaters - "First picture of you" (14 points)

I have this on a compilation. I bought it mainly just to get this song. And it was the only thing I danced to on Saturday.

9. Pucker up, for heaven's sake - there's never been so much at stake

Placebo - "Every me, every you" (15 points)

Points were awarded whichever way round me and you were (as the actress said to the bishop).

10. Swimming pools . . . movie stars . . . sheep . . . gerbils . . . gaffa tape. . .

Nine Inch Richards - "Closer to hogs" (9 points)

The less said about this song the better, frankly.

11. Call down the airstrike with a poisoned kiss

Shriekback -"Nemesis" (11 points)

Rhymes with parthenogenesis, apparently. I don't know any words in English that don't have rhymes. Any suggestions? Don't bother mentioning month, orange, purple or silver, though - I have them covered.

12. I followed New Model Army round Europe on 38p a day. I travelled round in a motorised skip so I'd always have somewhere to stay

Attila the Stockbroker - "Doggy on a string" (5 points)

Any resemblance to a Sandy Shaw song is doubtless purely coincidental.

Ministry - "Jesus built my hotrod"
Ahhhhh. I *have* heard that (I can hardly begin to describe my extreme loathing for it) which would possibly explain why the sample rang bells.

Self-indulgent melancholy from people with bad haircuts.
Echo and the Bunnymen - "The Killing Moon"
You were saying?

I have this on a compilation. I bought it mainly just to get this song.
Want a copy of the single on vinyl? I'm amazed that you like the song, but fair enough, you also like something by A Flock Of Seagulls, which is much more bizarre.

The less said about this song the better, frankly
And still he played it. ~sigh~

Only because he's in a more credible band. ~shakes head~ Honestly.
If he'd been in Kajagoogoo, his haircut would have been worse than bad.
I'm not sure I want to think too hard about that though.

Well, I *like* Kajagoogoo, but you knew that, and I also know that they're quite bad. You're right about the 'on average, better haircuts' though.

The first thing *I* knew about A Flock Of Seagulls was, yes, that they had bizarre hair, and that their singer was a hairdresser, so fair enough, there's really no excuse. But I have no problem with the guy at the back - or his hair.
And, hang on, I don't have a problem with Mike Score's hair, either. It's not terrible, it's just odd. Why is it so terrible? I've never understood this.

Oh well.

Maybe the guy in the middle was doing a 1980's New Romantic version of the Bobby Charlton comb-over.

Just a thought.

Seconded. Course it helps that he wasn't exactly hit with the ugly stick either...

Having seen the answers I'm not too ashamed of my performance. I've been skipping through that Ministry track since I first bought the CD all those years ago and I can't remember the last time I heard the Flock of Seagulls track. Most of the others I either haven't heard or else I am not familiar with.

What the...

That is without doubt the most surreal and bizarre thing I have heard anyone say about anything music-related in the last six months.

We are talking about the same man - I know we're talking about the same man.

My brain has just given up. Completely. Dead. Burned out. I do not operate in the same universe as the rest of you. Er, well, I knew that, but here it is, proved again.

Ow. I need to lie down.

Actually I've just gone looking for pictures to prove you wrong and he is looking a bit rough these days isn't he? Well he *was* a babe, about ten years ago...

Um. I have him on Top Of The Pops doing 'The Cutter' on video from 1983. He was not cute. Not then, not ten years from then, and certainly not now. In that particular performance he looked like a rabbit with a skin disease and mild epilepsy dressed in a potato sack. With stupid hair. I do not understand.
However, if you can find a picture to prove me wrong I will be very happy, because it upsets me to think that anyone from the early 80s was genuinely unattractive. ~g~

I eventually got the lotus eaters one at 11 that night, but it didn't seem worth posting. Still embaresed that I knew it was ministry but couldn't place the song. I only spent 8 min danceing to it on sat after all :)

Their favourite colour is lemon,
in the Democratic Republic of Yemen,
But in the heat of the day,
The Yemeni stay out of the way,

Or any "rhymeless" rhyme
Requires only will, ver-

There was a young lady of Yemen,
Who one day said "I fancy a lemon,"
"A peach is no good
"I want zest in my food
"And you know what to do with that melon!"

You put my lone solitary '2' in the wrong place. I know my Pulp; I don't know any Echo and the Bunnymen. On reflection, I should have got 7 as well, I just didn't believe I'd know any of your other lyrics.

With a gun to my head I'd possibly have guessed the artist for 12 right, but it would have been a guess. ;-)

Just checking up on my random poll answering of the other day. I can't believe I didn't get closer to hogs! That would have doubled my point scoring.

However, the fact that you know that song makes me think I ought to know you, as the only person I know with a copy of it is Michaela, from David (Abs).

Ah. That would explain why I don't recognize the face. I'm so bad with names. She's forever talking about this person and that person. I only recently found out that Peta (sp?) is a girl.

I'm not sure I recognise him either! What I'm interested in is whether any of these people have an original copy of the song, or whether all versions can be traced back to the same one.
