Hmmm. Weddings.
Jun. 14th, 2002 01:57 amIf a friend at work announces that she got married last week, what is the correct reaction?
Is it the same if she got married to someone else in your immediate team?
And if none of you had realised they were seeing each other?
Should I just shoot myself immediately?
Or should I start running keep-fit classes instead?

Date: 2002-06-14 02:28 am (UTC)If you had been considering asking one of the happy couple out just before they announced the wedding (as happened to a friend of mine recently) then the correct ettiquette is to say "Congratulations" while attempting to make your gritted teeth look like a smile...
One of my colleagues in London pulled that trick - although as it happens I was in on the secret since he'd had pre-wedding angst at me a couple of days before.
The boss was very annoyed as he had to rush around and sort out the Wedding Bonus Payment in one afternoon.
There are plenty of reasons for not telling anyone you're getting married - not wanting the groom to be force-fed alcohol, painted orange and tied to a lamppost is one.
Not wanting to have lots of people starting fights with distant relatives at the ceremony is another.

Not as it happens, no. Although there's a Tom Robinson poem abut that sort of thing that AJ might remember.

Helen's from Greenock. The actual festivities were all well isolated from workmates.

Date: 2002-06-14 05:34 am (UTC)It's usually cheesy chart dance stuff, although one mad instructor at a class I went to in Aberdeen liked to do an exercise called 'Bunnies' which involved basically doing very fast mini squats on all fours to banging techno. Scary stuff, but awfully good for your legs.
