I was just in The International (local pub set up by republican veterans of the Spanish Civil War) with my brother, and Tinseltown In The Rain came on the jukebox. I can't remember the last time that I heard that outside the house.

Earlier. we'd been in the Golf, which is now repulsive. They have six big-screen televisions, all of which were showing football. In a reasonably small pub. It's all glossy and wipe-clean, in spite of it being a pub which boasts of its age (1456, fact fans). Immensely sad. Just as sad as it is horrid, in fact. It used to be much more comfortable (if no cheaper), but somebody obviously found a Development Opportunity.

I notice also that the best pizza-delivery outfit I'm aware of is up for sale. I may have to pig out before the new owner ruins it.

And JWZ has been listening to my favourite Morphine song. I feel validated.

Every morning I wake up and Mark Sandman is still dead.

Mind you, I only recently noticed the memorial in Princes Street Gardens...

Brougham Place, towards the Meadows end. A few years ago there were distinct numbers of socialists and communists drinking there, but that may well have changed now. I'd like it to still be the case, though.

Weird.... Been in Edinburgh for nearly twenty years on and off, and never spotted The International. However, it looks like it might be on the site of the old Butt Inn (just before the corner of Tarvit Street and Brougham Place), which used to be a popular pub with Celtic/Hibs supporters, and had the odd political type of the non-Orange persuasion.

If it's not that pub, I need my eyes tested (and should test their glasses, too, as it were - probably before KJ's some Thursday).

But anywhere were the selling points include Powers Whiskey and Buckfast (served separately, I hope) has got to be interesting....

Yes the Golf was my only nearby alternative to Montpeliers(noisy, trendy, fll of my students) and I sued to like it lots. Took people there during the Fringe proudly saying how nice it was and was utterly horrified like you at the ghastliness. Eventually we sat outside in the rain with umbrellas up! What do you think of the Canny man? I like it but I know some peeps have Strong Feelings about it.

I actually have only been there once. It seemed very good, but I know that back then some people felt that the management were a bit up themselves. I haven't really heard much about it lately.

It is very cosy, atmospheric, full of weird shit, good beer/wine, beer garden etc.. I think its era of barring people randomly may be over which was why it got a bad rep in some parts. We should try it sometime :-)
