Just for the record, in case any of you don't know :

I thought it was important to let you know that I want to help someone else to live after my death by donating my organs.

Every year hundreds of people die while waiting for a transplant. If I can, I would like to help.

I have therefore added my name to the NHS Organ Donor Register which is a list of people willing to become donors should the situation ever arise.

I registered my wishes via the UK Transplant website. You can find out more about organ donation on their site.

Also, I'd like to point you at this Steve Bell cartoon[1] concerning the late President, and these washing instructions, which encouragingly don't seem to be a hoax (thanks to mr_tom and sneerpout for them). I have also just been to a photo booth to have a little something taken for my new staff card. Slack sullen face, cold dead eyes, disconcerting asymmetries . . . I think they've come out quite well. Scanning will follow, I expect.

I carry an Organ Donor card. They can have anything that's usable. I've always been icky about my corneas, but fuck it, I'll be dead, who cares?

I signed up online years ago but have yet to get myself a card. Which is possibly stupid, what with my job and all. (For those who still don't know, I work with children with cystic fibrosis and have lost two who were on the transplant list. Happily there are more who are alive post transplant).

As I am a filthy pervert, they don't want my (by definition) manky, diseased and contaminated blood. Do they want my undoubtedly similarly repugnant organs nevertheless?

The situation isn't entirely analogous, and there doesn't seem to be any blanket ban, as far as I can tell. Their current guidelines can be found here:

Obviously they're able to take far more effort checking each organ than they are each pint of blood, so presumably they can push the chance of a false-negative down far enough to cover the difference.

Indeed. There doesn't seem to be anywhere where they ask anyone not to offer, which they'd do VERY VERY OBVIOUSLY if it was an issue.

I've registered and carry a donor card but should get around to telling my family. I doubt they'd want my heart and kidneys as they were buggered at birth. Oh, and 'Ronald Reagan' and 'naked' shouldn't appear in the same paragraph ;P
