There was, apparently, another sizable coronal mass ejection this morning.

If you look at this page, you'll see a pretty picture. As I type, the Activity Level at the left side is at 9. Two days ago I think it was at 6. It might be worth seeing if the sky's clear a bit later on. Apparently (according to this page) the activity level needs to be ten to have a decent chance of seeing the aurora from Edinburgh (don't laugh, though : I've seen it happen). It's cloudy here at the moment, as well. Their plots page lists power estimates - 85 GW a couple of hours back. You could make more than a few slices of toast on that sort of output.

"Estimated power inputs as high as 500 gigawatts have been recorded into a single auroral region."

Ouch.

Saw it - utterly spectacular from 35,000 feet over Copenhagen.

the aurora last night was spectacular. we noticed it on the way back from the writers bloc event, and had to lie down in the meadows to watch it.

initially it was a big kinda babylon5 shadow-ship shape, with spikes off to the east and west, and then it went all cuttlefish changing shape and brightness really rapidly. colour was mainly blue-white with some green, and maybe some pink bits [although that might have been my eyes :) ]

did you see it from whitby ? apparently it was visible as far south as new mexico...

there may be another, less spectacular, display on friday night.
