About last night (continued)
Jun. 2nd, 2003 08:08 amThe first band on were called something like Fix-it. They might conceivably be Fixit-Kid, who certainly exist, but no certain information was going. People generally believed them to be from Derby. They were a three-piece, playing heavy post-punk stuff a little reminiscent of Black Flag or a less tense early Swans. I liked it.
The second band were Jarcrew, who were a lot more musical. I don't think they were as immediate, and probably not quite as much my kind of thing, but I'd like to see them again, or listen to their stuff more. The singer was quite animated, and the drummer played a straightforward ska line a bit too much.
Mclusky . . . were a bit intense. they reminded me a bit of Shellac, with touches of early Pixies, but with a bassist who outnuttered all members of both bands within about ten seconds of starting playing. I can't describe what he was doing, but it was very odd, in a range of ways. They have tense drumming, impressively (and oppressive) overdriven bass, and a guitarist trying to add tunes to it all (and occasionally succeeding). I got their first album ("My pain and sadness are more sad and painful than yours") and it's quite good, but doesn't match the performance live. there's a second, Albini-produced, album ("Mclusky does Dallas") that I'll probably get soon.
They were very loud, though. And very rhythmic. And very very loud. I'll be seeing them again soon, I think.
