Friday's Guardian had an interesting article about the song Stagolee (aka Stack Lee, or Stagger Lee), which has been recorded by World + Dog, including well-known Ozzie beat poet Nicholas "Laughing-Boy" Cave and his Performing Army of Bad Seeds.

Date: 2003-05-13 01:30 am (UTC)I can remember reading that it was 'based on a true story' in an interview with one of the Grateful Dead, who recorded a version in the 70s. The interview might have been with one of their assorted hangers-on, perhaps John Perry Barlow, but they never went into much detail about the story itself.
And before you say anything, I am not a goddamn hippy...
