Stagolee

Friday's Guardian had an interesting article about the song Stagolee (aka Stack Lee, or Stagger Lee), which has been recorded by World + Dog, including well-known Ozzie beat poet Nicholas "Laughing-Boy" Cave and his Performing Army of Bad Seeds.

I hadn't realised it was a true story.

I can remember reading that it was 'based on a true story' in an interview with one of the Grateful Dead, who recorded a version in the 70s. The interview might have been with one of their assorted hangers-on, perhaps John Perry Barlow, but they never went into much detail about the story itself.

Anyone in Cambridge might try and get to hear this sung by Richard Wildman. He does the occasional pub gig in these parts and has the audience in shocked silence with his live performance. Pretty good guitar player, too, finger-picking with his own open tuning.
