Intrusion

I drove over to Oxford last night with Sven and Thormund to go to Intrusion. I've been once before, and it was much the same (except more sober). I finally met Alex Page, who seems to pretending that his name is Dave at the moment. That's fine, though. I used to pretend my name was Dave too, once. He was looking for [livejournal.com profile] grahamb, who was actually there but I think they still managed to avoid each other. billboard_liz brought him over and introduced him, as apparently he said he was looking for a Graham from Cambridge, as if any Graham was as good as any other (which may be true, now that I think about it). Various other people were there - an Ed (now owns an angsty-looking picture of himself), a Natalie, a DT, a Jess and a few others. Nice night. The drive back at two AM was interesting. Thank God for Irn Bru.

Ahh, Oxford...

I feel all nostalgic now. I've been meaning to get to Intrusion at some point as well. Like you, I've only been once before, but it was pretty good. It didn't exist when I lived in those parts, in fact there were no goth nights at all. We had to make do with the "goth half hour" at the Switch.

Still, at least you'd know where all the goths were for half an hour.

Actually a lot of them didn't bother. Thus it gradually got whittled down to "goth fifteen minutes", then ten...

Disgraceful creatures.

Not any more... they've all cut their hair short now and started wearing grey. Some of them have even progressed to beige. When I went to Intrusion, there was nobody there that I recognised (except the girl I went with, of course!)

I was going to say "Thank heaven for small mercies, but . . . beige?

The individual in question was my goth-father too. Oh how the mighty have fallen...

It was pretty much a wasteland after Disturbance/Purgatory packed in. There was that thing in the pub by the bridge ... but it was just a pub. I've only made it to Intrusion once, and that briefly, but it looks good. Must make more effort.

That was after my time too.

Latino's I believe.

No, Latino's ("Deliverance") was pre-Purgatory, I think.

The Morpheus Project, in the Antiquity Hall, was the thing on the bridge.

Oh well, I've never even heard of that. Must have been after the people I knew stopped doing stuff.

Morpheus Project, yeah, that was the one. I went to some of those but tend not to enjoy having to drive (read: stay sober).

Actually, TMP started off down in some random pub in Jericho, but stopped when the pub was closed for refurbishment. I picked up the name, and unfortunately Andy as a DJ, when I moved to Oxford and started a night at the Antiquity, having been led to believe that people had actually heard of the night and would be drawn to it by the presence of a DJ who played the same set week in, week out.

After? You don't look old enough! I'm trying to think when it was now ... I suppose it wasn't that long ago, but history tends to telescope.

*chuckle* I'll take that as a compliment!

I lived in Oxford from '92 to '95 when I was an undergrad there. I'm pretty sure that Disturbance was quite a while after that...

Are you the same /mel/ wot posts to UPG, BTW?

Which was first though, Disturbance or Purgatory? I can never remember.

Yes, 'fraid so, the same /mel/.

I've no idea... I never went to either.

I suppose it didn't take too much of a leap of logic to work that one out! Although there do seem to be quite a few mel's around... Anyway, it's nice to "meet" you. I'm the person who posts under the unimaginitive handle of "Joanna Moy" (well, you know, it _is_ my name) -- atheistic Dan Dennett reader.

Oh 'ello waves. One of the very few people whose posts to UPG I read. I'd not made the connection - a problem I'm having with livejournal - and you're icon doesn't look much like your netgoth profile one as I recall. I guess if your name isn't Zotz the chances are it's already gone. Actually that's true if you are Zotz. Er, whatever.

There are a couple of other Mels, though they're female. The only other bloke I knew of married Scary Lady Sarah and disappeared off Stateside. (I'm sure there was a mix-up there somewhere and it was supposed to be me).

Well, I have to admit finding your posts to UPG among the more interesting ones too. :-) I guess that's why I wanted to know if you were you, if you know what I mean...

There's another male one in Newcastle... calls himself Legion on UPG, runs the Requiem nights.

I'm sure there was a mix-up there somewhere and it was supposed to be me

Oh well, better luck next time! ;-)

Hey I'm gonna be in Cambridge march 22nd/23rd. Want to meet up? Also I'm going to Austin's vernal equinox party on the Saturday night - know him? ([livejournal.com profile] groliffe - but he never posts :-(

I shouldn't think he'd mind you coming. Want me to ask him? he works for Shape Data - like everyone else I know in cambridge..

Oh really? My flatmate and I also refer to each other as 'Dave' occasionally, but this more a League of Gents thing, as opposed to what some people assume is an Only Fools and Horses thing. What motivated your particular name change eh?

No no, there is a schism between the Grahams and the Graemes. I know one of each (or is this just a Scottish thing?)

Alex *always* prentends to be Dave. Confuses the hell outta me, too.

See ya Saturday.
