Hear, hear.
Oct. 8th, 2005 11:02 amI do recommend his LJ to you all, incidentally, and not because I agree with all of it. Where I disagree, though, he does a good job of explaining his position, leaving me with a better understanding of the subject. And, of course, it's enlightening on things I don't know about at all. His records are pretty good, too, if you have the time.

Date: 2005-10-08 10:21 am (UTC)I find it like reading a music-business version of Joel Spolsky: self-important, blinkered, turgid, dull.

Date: 2005-10-08 10:39 am (UTC)I think what I mean is that his writing sounds like listening to a stereo recording played in mono. The sound's flat, and you just know there's something important missing.

But eventually conclude that in the box marked "argument", there is in fact a small purple knitted rabbit. And the author really likes daisies.

The worst is bearing the string of people 'agreeing' with him when they seem to have missed that he was just marking out large portions of their interests as assinine. :)
Didn't mean to be quite so snippy with you over there.

Date: 2005-10-08 11:31 am (UTC)I think he's correct rather less than the average for a suppposedly talented technologist. His Unix/Windows rants are particularly weird in particular.
He had some good things to say about tech interviews though, and I've appropriated a few of his interview questions.

Date: 2005-10-08 11:53 am (UTC)Like I said, it's annoying since I'm not a great fan of Winders, and it's always nice to have one's prejudices confirmed. However, when they're confirmed by slashdot, that's a sign to get a new set of prejudices...
For instance, he's entirely right about office environments, coder productivity and the measurement of same, code refactoring (rather than pitching out and starting afresh), toolkits and sensible support choices. (ie - if you know Windows, use Windows)

Date: 2005-10-10 12:21 pm (UTC)He was saying he finds them more positive and agreeable rather than that he believes any of it, I think. He's very into aesthetics. Often to the exclusion of all else, I sometimes suspect.
