1. lhiss is back, which is of course excellent news.

2. NMA are indeed playing in Northampton on Friday, and according to the box office I have tickets. It's their warmup for the Guildford festival the next day.

3. The turntable sounds fantastic. I'm not entirely sure how far I can push the volume before it'll annoy the neighbours. Patrick always used to get away with murder in this respect. He had poured concrete on his side, though, whereas I've only got breezeblocks. How sound-insulating are they?

I've heard putting bubblewrap (the big kind) on your wall helps sound insulation. If you can resist popping it, anyway.

Or cork tiles, although they won't be as fun as bubblewrap!

I think these things are better against reverberation and echoes than against sound actualy escaping. AFAIK the only thing that's much good against leakage is mass. Preferably lots and lots of it. Hence the effectiveness of the poured-concrete original walls. Maybe I should just put something really crunchy on and pop next door to listen?

That is in fact what I would do. Go next door, ask to be allowed an experiment (for their own comfort & convenience), and put on something truly obnoxious--something that samples all the frequencies. Turn it up by degrees until you can hear it through their walls (plying them with beer and brisket the whole time). Turn it down a notch. Mark the notch.
