The fact that they were so thick that just sitting in a tractor and pulling a cloth cap down over his ears fooled them!

Disproportionately, yes. For some reason it's the golf-course designer that everyone remembers. To be fair, though, as I remember it he was on with his gf/fiance/wife/whatever who was a nursery school teacher - a perfectly good job.
