I'm starting to seriously reconsider this job. What there is of it, I like, but there isn't at the moment enough to constitute full-time employment. I've spent all of today, bar about ten minutes, kicking my heels. Yesterday was the same. It had looked for a bit like it was picking up, but now I think that was probably illusory.

Anyone looking for a biologist?

Bet I got paid more than you to kick my heels over the last couple of months. Didn't make it any more satisfying, mind, so i got back into flying as soon as I was signed off as 'fit' (although how anyone 'in my condition' could be classed as 'unfit' in the first place eludes me. I had supposed that it was a precondition to be 'fit' in the medical sense - as opposed to the cardiovascular sense).

Get those CVs out. And don't forget to take the microscope with you : )

You're a biologist, I'm an analytical chemist (of sorts). Let's take over the world, using Mass-spec.

Sounds like all you two need is a rocket to put your specialities on. Need a combustion engineer? :)

I have to say my job is not something that is fun or part of me (but considering what I have gone through this may not be a bad thing). I have to say i am mainly here for the money (however terrible it sounds I remember my employer probably does not care much more about me, or perhaps I have just been badly stung before), but at the moment i am looking for my life outside of work ()thoguh it is not toally working and when I am on call here it may prove to be tricky).

That's exactly where I am. Five years at a job with people I like, doing something worthwhile, has left me screwed over and burnt out.

I'm about to start a job I am unlikely to care about but get paid good money to show up, be revoltingly competent and leave and not think about it. That is precisely what I was looking for in employment this time round.

Everybody I know who works for a scientific company is saying the same thing at the moment - business is many times smaller than it usually is at this time of year, we have nothing to do, etc. - don't know why. I'd say hang on until Autumn, not least because every company is in the same boat and most of them seem to think it will get better then but can't afford to hire new people now.
