It is sad. Do you ever feel that there's no-one really around making huge discoveries any more, it's all standing on the shoulders of rapidly extinctual giants? Or is it just that in today's society we're not impressed by anything any more. I mean, I remember when they first released the information for the HGP, and thinking that there should have been ceremonies, and parties, and a bit more 'oomph' than just a pull-out in the Guardian. Although I imagine you toasted its completion just a little!

No. Stem-cell biology has huge possibilities. Mathematicians are still surprising people regularly. Breakthroughs in quantum physics are regularly rumoured, and aren't failing to happen from a lack of ingenuity so I guess it'll come in time. I regularly read about things as serious possibilities that I had always assumed I had zero chance of seeing in my lifetime, but optimists are now talking about orbital towers within a couple of decades, and even realists say that it might happen within fifty years . . . so I might just see it after all. To quote [Unknown site tag], Christ I'm glad I live in the future, aren't you?

The official party was a little sedate, as too many people had to drive home. I celebrated, though. You might even have been there.
