I'm pretty sure I've seen this issue and a fix discussed in technical forums while I was browsing for solutions to a roaming profle problem. Can't recall where I'm afraid as it wasn't relevent to what I was doing, but if you do a Deja search for 'profiles' and other likely terms like 'XP' and 'Modem' you should be able to dig something up.
