Dale Guitar, Dick Legend!

[Ahem]

I went to see Dick Dale (Guitar Legend) on Tuesday, and absolutely fantastic he was, too. I alwasy say that the previous time I saw him he was Incendiary (note the capital) and he was as good this time too. Apart from the venue being much smaller and not in Lodnod, the main differences were a) that it was one bloody fuck of a lot louder (being in a scummy brick-lined cellar in the Old Town rather than in the Queen Elizabeth Hall) and b) that at the end he didn't even leave the stage, but got his pen right out and went back to the stagefront to chat and sign things. I think he hung around there for about half an hour or so - long enough that myself and CJ fucked off to the pub. He struck me as a great bloke, as well as a fine entertainer and (naturally) an excellent musician. Lara and Anonymouseth were there, of course, as well as Glen and Dave. I asked Dave about his 4-track, which has Historical Significance as far as my friends are concerned. Still fully working, apparently, and has all 4 tracks exposed unmixed on sockets on the back, which is just the answer I wanted.

Anonymouseth has also mailed me to point out that as well as mclusky in April, King Tut's (in Glasger) has the mighty mighty NoMeansNo playing in July, so everyone look out for gig-going opportunities and maybe even new records around then.

Oh, and also:

With the aid of a couple of new bits of cable, I have my (Ultrawide) SCSI card talking to the (SCSI-1) scanner (courtesy of AJ & Nicky - thanks, I owe you). It's probably trying to remember the morse code it learned in primary school. Drivers and apps are currently downloading.

This "dick legend" thing could trigger a few spam filters, though:

"Enlegendify your dick: grow 3-4 inches overnight (and then go back to normal when you have a piss in the morning."

I wish he was doing more UK dates...I mentioned this gig to my m-i-l and she sighed. She would have loved to have gone, but Cheltenham to Scotland is a bit far for her.

On dickdale.com it mentioned a London gig on the Monday. This was added very late in the day ... a few weeks ago the Edinburgh gig was the only UK show. Someone must have worked out he had a day or two of space in his travels and made him an offer.

It was extremely loud. My hearing was crapped all over the next day. I am going to carry earplugs with me from now on at all times, as I don't want my tinitus to get any worse than it was already got.

Dick Dale rocks. I'm horribly envious.

If you think him worthy of it, you can vote for him in some guitar poll - details on his site.

Fantastic news! Further to our conversation of a couple of weeks back, I tried sampling the old Born In Shades four track masters using my domestic tape deck, and then doubling the speed and flipping the reversed tracks in Cubase, but it did really wierd things to the noise, and the result was a bit of a hissy mess. If Dave's amenable to a loan, could I post you the masters of the Torphichen St. session to be digitised as well at the relevant point?

Alice Donut are supporting NMN in London, according to the Southern website. No mention of support on other nights. You like Alice Donut don't you?
