the death has been reported of Glasgow's Pastor Jack Glass of the Zion Baptist Church, a man chiefly distinguished by having his religious views described as "too extreme" by Ian Paisley. My gran would have loved him. The wee-free gran, that is, rather than the other.

I should probably mentionalso that I was saddened a few weeks back by the death of Rikki Fulton. His sketches featuring the Rev I M Jolly (a lovely, kind, gentle, but terribly depressed Church of Scotland minister) were the best and most memorable part of Hogmanay for me, right up until the point I discovered getting drunk and falling over. He'll be sadly missed. Apparently the I M Jolly book "How I found God (and why He was hiding from me)" was the bestselling book in Scotland last year. Deservedly so, I'm sure.

Oh Rikki Fulton. Gosh, that is sad. I can imagine there'll be more books of condolences for him in Glasgow than there were for that Diana..

When I was a student, and before I broke my association with the Catholic Church (I was a late developer) there was an event at the Catholic Students' Union — a debate of some kind, I think — at which Pastor Jack Glass was due to appear. I was looking forward to it, and then forgot to go!

When I was growing up as a Celtic supporter, he was a noted hate-figure, of course. Can't say I'm exactly sad to hear of his death, but I suspect Glasgow just got a bit less... interesting, let's say.

I totally agree with you about Rikki Fulton and hogmanay.
