Well, I changed a few permissions (/dev/mixer*, dev/dsp*, maybe one or two others), installed an output module which for some reason doesn't come included or as a required package (and rejoices in the obvious name alsaplayer-alsa) and, for the moment at least, running stuff as root.
Nothing too deep for a proper geek, but for an honest biologist such as myself . . .
This does mean I can listen to some very nice Neubauten mp3s that I have lying around, of course.
