Banana has died.

The death has been reported, by the BBC, of the Reverend Canaan Banana, the first president of Zimbabwe after the end of white rule.

Those of you who were following the news a few years back will remember that he faced a series of allegations of serious (homo-)sexual misconduct, which were widely believed to be politically motivated. They did, however, gift the world headlines such as Banana "forced man to have sex".

I feel forced to mention the apocyphal story about the news coverage of British success in north Africa during World War 2, trapping the Afrika Korp's rearguard - "Eighth army push bottles up Germans".

Anyway . . . farewell Reverend. The world is a poorer place without you.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I know I've a childish sense of humour but the trapping of the Afrika Korps....
