I never heard this piece of folklore until it was on the radio this morning. How did people ever get the idea that sound waves from a duck's beak would behave differently from sound waves from anything else at all?
Evidently lots of people have been following this research most closely with their own experiments. Listeners to Radio 4's Home Truths had several weeks of just such evidence - and waking up to one's clock radio on a Saturday morning emitting a load and highly reverberating QUAAACCCKKK is incredibly disturbing. Even if it is played by John Peel.
Oo - why do you have the name "I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter"? I have a friend who used to walk around stations with it written on her arse, until the jeans died.
tviokh used it as a sig quote on alt.gothic many years ago. I thought it was entirely suitable. I have no idea as to its origin, and Google is not helpful.
