The computers are still mostly in castors-up mode, as they have been since the weekend. I'm now most of the way through a book about Islam, and my associates here have just remembered that we have a Monopoly set in the office.

Indeed. And at the moment, I'm being paid to sit listening to the radio and reading about the Moghul empire in northern India, circa 1600 AD.

Life could be worse. And if the systems don't come back, they'll send us home soon too.

But incidentally, which book on the Mughals are you reading?
Sometimes I wish my work was more computer-dependent. I only get to go home when the power fails and the backup generator doesn't come on line.

It's "Islam: a short history" by Karen Armstrong. I'm through that bit now. And yes, all hope of getting work done today has been abandoned, so I'm off home shortly.

There's been lots of reviews of that in the history publications lately. Can't think why :-) I suppose I'll get round to reading it one day - her _history of god_ is really good.

It is exactly what it says - a short history. If you already know much about the subject, then there's probably not much there for you. I don't, though.

And yes, A History Of God is a book I found fascinating. Shortly after reading it, I got collared by a pair of Mormon missionaries. Lovely people, but did they ever get more than they bargained for . . .
