Long time no update.
Sep. 10th, 2002 09:46 pmBless me LJ, for I have not sinned very much. It has been three weeks since my last update. Last significant update, anyway. Droning on about the 'Fields doesn't really count.
Saturday about ten days back was John Otway. Either you've seen him or you haven't, and if you haven't then I can't explain. I want you all to remember that his next hit is out on the 30th of this month, so you've all to go and buy it. There's a London gig on the 6th that I'm quite tempted by - it coincides with the chart rundown when he finds out how big his birthday present really is.
That day I also replaced the radiator in the car to cure the leak that I mentioned. I tried sealant but it didn't really work - the leak slowed but didn't stop. When i got the old one off, it was quite corroded down one side, so I guess it was just a general fail through ten years' exposure rather than any kind of trauma. It was quite a manageable job, which was nice. I put the radiator in a week and a half ago, put some cleaner in this last weekend and I've just been flushing it through and topping up, so it's officially about done. I was going to go yachting with Pyro the next day, but it turned out the job wasn't quite finished (come on, I'd never done it before . . .) so it didn't happen.
The Calling last week was tolerably fun, but I was quite tired. I blagged first set by encouraging
darkgoblin to turn up late, then went home a bit after midnight. I don't usually bale early, but I was fading fast.
Friday evening was my delighful boss' leaving drink. I had much to drink and talked to various people from work at the Maypole in town. Then I walked home and thought about death a lot on the way. My main conclusion is that I'd quite resent dying this week, but anytime after that would be distinctly more acceptable. It had been a funny day. i'd not gone for a meal with the team at a local pub, on the grounds that a) I hate the place, b) I hate the staff, c) there was nothing I fancied on the menu, and d) when I had a meal there at Christmas it was horrible. I consider myself justified.
Saturday was fairly quiet. I went to the shops, then went to the pub, then went back to
razornet and
vyvyan's place for wine, music and musical argument (just me being unreasonable in this case, about something with lots of wibbly guitar in it).
Sunday I went out to Wandlebury with Raven. I've been meaning to drop by since I moved down about five years ago, so I'm quite pleased about finally managing it. It's what would probably count as a hill fort if it were smaller - there's a double dyke with a ditch in between, about a thousand feet across. These days the ring itself is wooded, but there's a small country house with stables and some grounds inside it (apparently the owners owned the Godolphin Arab, fact fans) that we were, frankly, a lot less interested in. There were proper-sized trees, too, and the old earthworks led to me parroting out all the stuff that Ozzie Paul told me about them in the pub a few weeks ago. After that we went out to my work, because Raven's not seen it. We wandered round outside the building and failed to find the carp, which was interesting. Normally you can't go near ther lake without them coming out in the hope of a feed. The car overheated on the way back - the effect of the cleaner I'd just put in, I guess, because it's been fine since - so the planned trip to Denver's been postponed.
Yesterday was a video evening at Sarah the Pilot's place. Being John Malkovitch (finally - fine film) and Dangerous Liaisons. Main notable point :
firewoman looked like she was agreeing with someone on the subject of being lusted after by two people through the same pair of eyes. How can she know?
Sarah has a couple of monstrously strange christmas songs. If the special Saturnalia Calling comes off, then we'll be well-equipped. Fortunately, thanks to to
razornet I already had my riposte prepared.
Today has been quiet also. Work (odd zebrafish rearrangement issues), then home and refilling car coolant system. Tomorrow will be quiet also, probably, but Thursday - unless I'm very much mistaken - is the gig by Kenny Young and the Eggplants in London. I'll see if I can crash at Kate's, because Friday morning we're off (with our mum) to Iceland for a long weekend. Should be fun. After that, it's the Calling on Tuesday, a friend's place for dinner on Wednesday and everyone back to mine for a video evening on Thursday. Then the pub on Friday. After which, anyone's guess.
